President of the Club, Eivina Žižiūnaitė-Allbaz, gave a welcoming speech at the 7th Forum FriedensBrot, which focused on Ukraine and the current situation in the agricultural sector. "Long-standing initiatives like FriedensBrot are the foundation on which we can build cooperation. We are more aware than ever of how connected we are to each other because of the war. That's why I'm sure we will stick together and work together in the future, because going it alone is not the way, not this time.''

The association has been working on the topic of "Peace and Agriculture" since its inception. This year's Forum FriedensBrot focused on the people and agriculture in rural areas of Ukraine and the European Union, as well as issues of global food security.

There was an impressive discussion with Dr. Alex Lissitsa, member of the executive committee of the Ukrainian agricultural association UCAB and co-chairman of the Working Group Eastern Europe of the German Agricultural Society (DLG), and Joachim Rukwied, President of the German Farmers' Association (DBV).

This morning, members of the Committee for Food and Agriculture of the German Bundestag and members of the Club of Agricultural Diplomats met at the Residence of the Swiss Embassy in Berlin to exchange views on current agricultural topics.

After opening statements by Dieter Cavalleri, chargé d'affaires of the Swiss Embassy in Germany, Peter Vermeij, President of the Club of Agricultural Diplomats in Germany, and Artur Auernhammer, Member of the Bundestag and representative of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the Committee for Food and Agriculture, a discussion was held during a working breakfast about topics such as the war in Ukraine, food security and the challenges faced during the current legislative period.

All topics discussed require an international approach, which means good relations between German politics and the agricultural attachés are more important than ever.

Today, members of the Club had the opportunity to exchange views with Prof. Dr. Peter Strohschneider, Chairman of the Commission on the Future of Agriculture (ZKL).

In around 90 minutes, Prof. Dr. Strohschneider told of how 30 representatives from agriculture, industry, NGOs, science and retail came to a common vision for the future of agriculture. Furthermore, agricultural diplomats of the Club's member states had the chance to ask Prof. Dr. Strohschneider about the ZKL's final report.

The Club of Agricultural Diplomats is very grateful for this open and interesting discussion!

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic it was unfortunately not possible to host the Club’s traditional annual reception this year. Instead, the Club made a symbolic gesture by donating 250 euros to each of the three organisations that participated with a guest stand at the annual receptions from 2017 until 2019. These organisations are Berliner Tafel e.V., GemüseAckerdemie (Ackerdemia e.V.) and  Über den Tellerrand kochen e.V..

During three video calls the Club’s Vice-Presidents and representatives from each organisation looked back on the year 2020, shared their experiences and did a virtual handover of the donation.

The Club wishes these three organisations all the best, and it hopes to be able to welcome another Berlin-based organisation at the annual reception in 2021!
